EEF 2022 to Feature Creative Business Forum ‘Social and Cultural Development of the Northern Regions’

The Creative Business Forum ‘Social and Cultural Development of the Northern Regions’ will be held on 5–8 September as part of the 7th Eastern Economic Forum on the campus of Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU). The forum is part of the event plan of Russia’s chairmanship of the Arctic Council in 2021–2023 and is being organized by the Innosocium Foundation, the social platform of the Roscongress Foundation, with the support of the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East and the Arctic.

«In August, the government approved the plan of events for the Creative Industries Development Concept. The corresponding directive was published on 17 August. The support for creative sectors of the economy at the highest state level indicates the importance of creative entrepreneurship for sustainable development, particularly in the new economic and geopolitical conditions. In this regard, it is essential to implement regular public initiatives, as well as promote and expand the public’s involvement in the creative economy, including by regularly holding events to promote the products of Russian creative industries at Russian and foreign venues,» said Anton Kobyakov, Adviser to the Russian President and Executive Secretary of the EEF 2022 Organizing Committee.

To implement the plan of events as part of the Creative Industries Development Concept in 2022–2024, the Innosocium Foundation has been entrusted with holding the Creative Business Forum and other convention and exhibition events each year.

The business programme of the Creative Business Forum at the EEF will focus on the social and cultural development of the northern regions, promising areas of creative industries, and the development of the social sector in the northern territories. The discussion participants, including representatives of the Russian Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North, will discuss specific aspects of the development of northern cities, industrial Arctic design, the traditions of small-numbered peoples, tourism, technology’s impact on life in the North, the regional film industry and animation, national cuisine, and the creation of local art residences and art hubs. Social aspects will be devoted to sessions on supporting young people and Indigenous peoples.

«The effectiveness of the creative industries sector, where the public’s creative potential is particularly important, largely depends on the conditions that have been created for its development. With the example of Yakutia and Yugra, we see how a thoughtful attitude towards human capital can fundamentally change the local economy of a region. Today, there is a unique opportunity to utilize the capabilities of creative industries to develop Russia’s northern territories. And our job is to scale up this approach that is exemplary in terms of organizing the process to all regions, so that creative industries can be used as a resource for economic growth throughout the country,» said Yelena Marinina, Deputy CEO of the Roscongress Foundation and Director of the Innosocium Foundation.

The business and cultural programme of the Creative Business Forum ‘Social and Cultural Development of the Northern Regions’ is being organized with the strategic comprehensive support of the government of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District. The Youth Multimedia Discussion Campus will feature video art dedicated to the Spirit of Fire International Film Debut Festival, which has been held in Yugra for two decades and has served as a launching pad for dozens of stars of Russian and world cinema over the years.

«Representatives of 124 nationalities live on the territory of Yugra. Such ethnic and cultural diversity is a key factor in the shaping of the region’s unique cultural code. For the Indigenous peoples of the North, following centuries-old traditions and evolving in harmony with nature is a life philosophy. At the forum, we will share our experience of integrating local cultural codes into the creative industries, present the opportunities that the region has created for self-realization and the development of talent, as well as our interregional and international projects. Yugra is a region of opportunities that is open to cooperation,» Yugra Governor Natalya Komarova said.

The official EEF business programme includes the following sessions: ‘North-South: Ethnocultural Heritage as a Resource for Sustainable Development’, ‘People — The Creative Potential of the North. How To Make the Arctic Regions Attractive for Life and Creativity’, and ‘Social Agenda of the Regions: New International Crossroads’.

The sessions of the Creative Business Forum outside the official EEF business programme will be held at the House of Indigenous Peoples pavilion, a new platform that is dedicated to the culture of the Indigenous peoples of the North and will host the following sessions: ‘Russian Arctic Style: From the Epos to the Product’, ‘Snow House: Special Aspects of the Development of the Environment of Northern Cities’, ‘Tourism or a Challenge. What Attracts People to the Arctic?’, ‘From the Museum to the Creative Cluster: How Public Spaces Create a Creative Life’, ‘Film Industry and Animation of the North and East: New Markets and Technologies’, and ‘Gastronomy of the Arctic, Siberia, and the Far East: How to Surprise a Picky Guest?’
