The Contribution of Regional Cinema to the Development of the Economy of Northern Territories is One of the Topics the Innosocium Foundation will be Discussing at SPIEF 2022

On 15 June, the first day of SPIEF 2022, the Creative Business Forum, organized by the social platform of the Roscongress Foundation — the Innosocium Foundation, will be held at St. Petersburg’s ExpoForum. A session of one of the main blocks of the Forum: Opportunities, Specifics, and Potential of the Film Industry of the North, will take place from 14:30–16:00 in conference hall G5, 10 (room 145).

Northern cinema has been referred to as a phenomenon of the Russian film industry in recent years. It is distinguished primarily by how greatly it differs from conventional films. Symbols and collective cultural images give the viewer the feeling of venturing into unexplored territory. The further development of northern cinema is primarily associated with the creation of an effective system that will involve the establishment of a full production cycle, a significant expansion of promotion and distribution channels, and the development of a regional ecosystem with its own development centres and sustainable business links between all the participants.

During the discussion, participants will exchange views on a range of issues that will play an important role in the successful development of the film production complex. They will assess the opportunities and constraints that exist in northern film production, discuss steps to create a full cycle film industry, and identify the key partners at home and abroad necessary for the further development of northern cinema.

The session will be moderated by Oleg Ivanov, Head of Research at the Film Institute of the National Research University Higher School of Economics. Speakers will include General Director of the Lenfilm Film Studio Fyodor Scherbakov, General Director of Yenisei Cinema Irina Belova, Director of the Yakut Film Network Pyotr Chiryaev, Deputy Executive Director of the Regional Film Support Foundation of the Russian Cinematographers Union Dmitry Yakunin, and Head of the State National Film Company Sakhafilm Sardana Savvina.

«The themes of this year’s CBF sessions focus specially on the northern territories and are closely linked with the activities of the Russian Chairmanship of the Arctic Council. Northern cinema is justifiably seen as a special phenomenon in the film industry of recent years, given the significant way it differs from conventional films. We’d like to speak as broadly as possible about the impact that the so-called northern film industry can have in the coming years on the social and economic development of the North and the achievement of the country’s national development goals,» Deputy CEO of the Roscongress Foundation and Director of the social platform of the Roscongress Foundation — the Innosocium Foundation Yelena Marinina said.
